BACKGROUND OF THE PROGRAMME.
The Programme started in October, 1981 with Late Prof. Bestman, an applied mathematician, as the Programme coordinator. He was succeded in 1984 by Prof. Sharma who was succeeded by Prof. Mshelia, a Theoretical Physicist, from 1985 to 1988. Prof. S.O Ale Succeeded Prof. Mshelia and headed the programme until 1992, where Prof. E.J.D. Garba took over the mantle of the leadership of the programme. Prof. M.S Sesay, a pure mathematician and mathematics educator, succeeded Prof. Garba in the year 1994 and headed the program until 1995, In the year 1995, Prof. Ram, a Professor of applied Mathematics, was appointed to take over from Prof. Sesay. In 1996, Prof. Garba took over again from Prof. Ram and headed the program until 1998. The Programme was headed by Late Prof. E.J.A Edemenang, a Prof of computer science from 1998 to 2001 when Professor M.S Sesay was reappointed and served from 2001 to 2004. Dr Haruna Y. Succeeded Prof. Sesay from 2005 to 2007. In2007, Professor D.G Yakubu was appointed and served for two years where he handed over the leadership of the programme in 2009 to Dr. Bala Ma’aji Abdulhamid. Presently the programme is offering degrees in Computer science, Mathematics and Statistics.

Aim and Objectives
AIM AND OBJECTIVES
The main objective of the progrmme is to give a broad, though not superficial training that will equip the prospective research student with the essential tools needed for discovering and solving computer related Mathematical and Statistical problems. The student will be exposed to as much literature as possible in his field of research and encouraged to interact with the academic members industrial and co-operate organizations working in related fields.
A successful student who is interested in a career in research and teaching would have been provided with basic background in methodologies of research, while others would be well suited to play an important coordinating role in a variety of industries and other areas of employment..
