                ABOUT ATBU The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University,  ATBU , Bauchi was established in 1980 as the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Bauchi, located in the North Eastern part of Nigeria with Dr. Jerome Udoji and Professor A. O. Adekola as the pioneer Pro-Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor respectively, while Alh. Adamu Aliyu was the first Registrar of the University. At inception, the University inherited the site of the former Bauchi State College of Arts and Science (BACAS) at Yelwa as temporary site. She also acquired 4,500 hectare parcel of land Bauchi-Ningi Road as its permanent site and another parcel of land along Bauchi-Maiduguri Road on which a residential estate for staff was developed; the estate is called Kari Estate. As at the time of the first set of students were admitted in 1981/82 session, the programme had one (1) Professor, one (1)Reader, 2 senior Lecturers, 4 Lecturers I and II, Programme graduates its first set of students in the 1987/88 session. The first coordinator was Prof. Elijah Diket Mshelia, FAS a Nuclear Theoretical Physicists. Later, Professor Jacob Koshy, a Professor of Solid State Physics, became the coordinator in 1993. Mal. Sani Ali became acting Coordinator in 1995. Department of Mathematical Sciences Head  List all Staff Departments BACKGROUND OF THE PROGRAMME. The Programme started in October, 1981 with Late Prof. Bestman, an applied mathematician, as the Programme coordinator. He was succeded in 1984 by Prof. Sharma who was succeeded by Prof. Mshelia, a Theoretical Physicist, from 1985 to 1988. Prof. S.O Ale Succeeded Prof. Mshelia and headed the programme until 1992, where Prof. E.J.D. Garba took over the mantle of the leadership of the programme. Prof. M.S Sesay, a pure mathematician and mathematics educator, succeeded Prof. Garba in the year 1994 and headed the program until 1995, In the year 1995, Prof. Ram, a Professor of applied Mathematics, was appointed to take over from Prof. Sesay. In 1996, Prof. Garba took over again from Prof. Ram and headed the program until 1998.
